Approximately 22,000,000 people live in Venezuela,
97% of which speak Spanish. Religious freedom is guaranteed by the
constitution, but Catholicism is recognized as the official state
religion. 87% of the population professes to be Catholic, yet less
than 10% are actively involved in the church.

Protestants compose about 5% of the population, three-fourths of which
are Pentecostals. The Baptist Convention consists of 300
churches with 60,000 attendees, one-third of which are members.
At present, Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons compose less than 2% of the
population, but their growth rates are greater than that of any other
single group.
Statistics for the
state of Aragua are not radically different from those of the country. From 3 to
5% of the people are evangelized. There are 16
Baptist churches. The only other evangelical
group
working in this area is the Church of
God.
The
Baptist Convention consists of 300
churches with 60,000
attendees, one-third of
which are members.
Existing evangelical churches
are doing a good job reaching the blue collar workers of Aragua,
but less than 1% of the professional class is involved in any type of
church.
IMB missionaries Mike and Jan Bennett are committed to sharing the
Gospel with the professionals of Aragua.
